Marv Megley, a regional sales manager for MAPEI, was one of 1,700 cyclists who raced in a two-day, 170 kilometer charity event in Alberta to help fund research for multiple sclerosis. One of his teammates was son-in-law Shane Goodyear, whose brother is afflicted with the disease.
“My brother was diagnosed with MS five years ago," he said. "Ryan's MS progressed very fast. He needs 24 hour care and is in a home where he can be helped. Ryan is currently in a wheelchair and has trouble doing things that we take for granted. It is sad to see a 29-year-old man have so much taken away from him. I look forward to the day that this disease will no longer take anybody like my brother.”
Megley and his team, who were sponsored by MAPEI, raised more than $8,500 for MS research through the RONA MS Bike Tour. All told, more than $1.4 million was raised by the event. The race began in Leduc, Alberta and progressed nearly 73 kilometers to the small city of Camrose. After staying overnight in the area, the cyclists pedaled back to Leduc, occasionally battling 30 to 40 km-per-hour headwinds.
“Completing the ride is truly an exhilarating experience, especially when you know that it is for a very worthy cause,” said Megley.
